Meet Kathy Sue Powell, the Unit Advancement Chair for Troop 3 & Troop 1003.
Q: Kathy, what is your background with scouting?
“I was my son’s den mother in the 80’s and I am a troop leader for my youngest granddaughter, Caitlin, since she started as a Daisy Scout.”
Q: What about your family?
“I have two grandsons that are Eagle Scouts from Troop 3: Joseph and Alex Powell. My oldest granddaughter is a Gold Award Girl Scout and my two youngest granddaughters are members of Scouts BSA Troop 1003.
“I have two sons, Bill and Chris, and five grandchildren: Joseph, Nichole, Alex, Abbi, and Caitlin. My oldest granddaughter is finishing her freshman year at Virginia Tech and is studying aeronautical engineering.
“My husband passed away in 2014 and we were married for 41 years.”
Q: When it comes to training, what are a few of the trainings you have received during your time Scouts?
“I have completed my Committee training and Advancement Coordinator training as well as my Merit Badge Counselor training.”
Q: What are your favorite things about Scouting?
“I enjoy going on the trips and traveling with the scouts. I’ve been able to travel with them for the cycling merit badge, visited them at the Jamboree and camp, and have volunteered at summer camp. I especially enjoyed the American Labor merit badge and Metalworking.”
Q: What are a few of your professional achievements?
“Prior to retirement, my husband and I owned a sealing and striping company in Mineral.”
Q: What do you do outside of Scouting?
“Outside of scouting, I enjoy spending time with my family. My grandson, Joseph and I, spend a lot of time together and we travel frequently throughout the summer. I also like to cook, entertain, and have family over.”
