Meet Darin Sharpley, the Scoutmaster for Troop 3. Darin has been a member of Troop 3 since 2019 and is the founding Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 1003, formed in 2021.
Q: Darin, what is your background with scouting?
“I began my adventure in Scouting as a Den Leader in 2012, when my son Simon became a Tiger Cub in Pack 183 Rochester, NH. Since then I have had the pleasure of working as Den Leader and CubMaster with Pack 190 and ScoutMaster with Troop 190 in Louisville, KY. Finally, I’ve been Assistant ScoutMaster, and ScoutMaster of Troop 3 Louisa, and Assistant ScoutMaster of Troop 1003 Louisa. I’ve also enjoyed teaching at University of Scouting and attending and staffing WoodBadge, as well as other positions supporting scouting through the years.”
Q: What about your family?
“To me. Family is what scouting is all about. I’ve been married for 22 years. My wonderful wife Rebecca and I have 3 boys. Simon, my oldest has earned the Rank of Eagle from Troop 3. My middle son Nick is a Life Scout, and is currently serving as Senior Patrol Leader. And my youngest son Ben is a First Class Scout both with Troop 3 Louisa.”
Q: When it comes to training, what are a few of the trainings you have received during your time Scouts?
“IOLS, Wood Badge, Train The Trainer, Basic Adult Outdoor Orientation, Merit Badge Counselor , and many leader specific trainings.”
Q: What are your favorite things about Scouting?
“My favorite thing is seeing first hand, the positive effect Scouting has on youth in every part of scouting. A scout can attend a summer camp, Jamboree, or a training course like NYLT and return positively changed for life. Some of my other favorites are camping, fishing, hiking, exploring; there really are too many to list.”
Q: What are a few of your professional achievements?
“One thing I consider an achievement, is becoming a mentor and leader. Scouts has helped me achieve this in a personal and professional capacity.”
Q: What do you do outside of Scouting?
“Outside of scouting, I am a Technical Specialist for a Telecommunications Company.”
